I needed to get to her.

My mind was running through everything I wanted to come out when my foot hit the front step of the porch and I heard the barking coming from inside. Rosie’s ears went up and she followed me to the front door.
There was a sort of stillness that happened when we were doing sweeps in Afghanistan caused by the unknown on the other side of the door. You weren’t sure if someone was going to try to kill you or if you were going to have to be ready to do the same. The tension was there, even on the civilian sweeps that we made where there shouldn’t have been anything to suspect, and I had learned how to manage it in a hostile environment.
But this wasn’t a war zone. It was where the woman I’d fallen in love with lived.
That didn’t stop the same unease from stiffening my spine as I knocked once, more in warning than permission, and twisted the unlocked knob.
